I was so happy back in the day when this talented schoolteacher and his nice family built me, right here on the Long Beach Peninsula. He was a woodshop teacher and gave me lots of special touches. I had (and still have) beautiful hand-cut shingles, straight from old growth forest. You can’t find that, nowadays. I also have beautiful carved railings, inside and out.
But the kids grew up, and the family stopped spending summers here. It’s been lonely, since I’m hidden among the trees beside a state forest. I have one nice neighbor whose house I can barely see, but he checks up on me. I have one other neighbor but she comes only when its time for the clams to be dug.
Then, one day, a man showed up, said I had great bones, and decided to spruce me up a bit. Now I’m full of life again with a brand new roof, new deck, new windows and doors, new bamboo floors, new bathroom fixtures, plus a lot of other new stuff, and a very complimentary (if I say so myself) coat of paint. No, not my outside. (It’s what’s inside that’s important, I’ve always been told.) My outside is just great. Because I’m covered in old growth, my shingles have never faded.
I was feeling really important when I heard someone say I was worth $250,000. I even heard one person say I must be worth at least $300,000, not a penny less. I don’t know what happened, but now people are saying I’m not worth as much as I was. I don’t know what I did to deserve that. Everybody who comes to visit loves me. But they must all be broke since they can’t get the money to buy me, even though I’m not worth that much any more.
So, here’s the way my story will end. I’ve got to get myself a new family, and soon. You can have me. All you have to do is come up with the money.
Rumor is that there will be a big auction later this year when they try to find me a new family. If you think that you and I could make great memories together, email me and I’ll make sure they put you on the list to be notified about the auction. If you can’t wait, and want to meet me now, I’ll make sure someone is there to open my front door for you.

Today was a wonderful day. It began with a gentle rain, and when the sun broke through I had a feelin’ something good was about to happen. And it did. I was graced by the presence of a young couple from up north. It felt so good to be appreciated again. I smiled as they admired my carved railings and talked about my bamboo floors. My neighbor even delighted the man with tales of guys on ATV’s racing through my forest on a bear-hunting spree. That neighbor can tell some wild ones, he can. I’m glad I didn’t know about that incident ’cause those black bears are my friends.
